How Should You Prepare Your Home For A Long Term Absence?
It can be challenging to remember all the little tasks that need tending to, when preparing your home for travel plans. Regardless of the duration, there’s always a long list of to-do’s.
Here are a few tips to ensure everything is taken care of as you prepare for your stay in a long-term condo rental…
Shut off your water mains, especially during cooler months (gas lines too). There’s nothing worse than being out of town and receiving a phone call from your frantic next door neighbor informing you – there’s been an explosion of pipes. Make certain everything is in good working order, before you leave, and reduce the temperature of your hot water tank, as well.
Make sure your windows are sealed extra tight. If you have drapes, keep them closed. Shutters? Even better. You can use caulking and thick plastic, too. In the event of window breakage – there will be less risk of in home damage.
Unplug your fridge. Keep the fridge and freezer doors open 7 inches or more. Remember to get rid of the food, before you do. Basically, it’s a good rule of thumb to unplug as many electrical appliances and gadgets as you can.

Another great trick is to cover your big furniture pieces, with old sheets. This reduces dust build up, it also means you’ll have less cleaning to do when you return home.
Store or lock up patio furniture, BBQ’s, bikes – eliminate the risk of your chairs ending up stuck in the chimney. Make sure outer areas are well protected from heavy winds. It’s also good to check for nearby tree branches that could cause damage, in the event of a windstorm. Yet, at the same time, keep consistent with your yard maintenance schedule.
Save a few extra bucks by cancelling your cable service, and put your subscriptions on hold (newspapers, periodic publications, etc.). Every penny counts when travelling.
Ask a trustworthy neighbour to check on your house, regularly. They can make sure the doors are locked, no windows have been broken, and they can grab the mail for you. It’s also a good idea to set timers for indoor and outdoor lights, TVs, and the radio. Try to keep the times as similar to your routine as you can.
Of course, another option is to have somebody stay in your home while you’re away… A house sitter, a pet sitter (somebody’s got to take care of the goldfish after all). Having a trustworthy person stay in your home is great if you do have pets or children, as this will be less disruptive for them.
Making everything as seamless as possible, will allow you to feel more peace of mind on your voyage. Still have questions? Give us a call, send us an email or visit our website!
